Greece, with its traditional islands, long sandy beaches, exquisite landscapes and tantalizing cuisine, has always been one of the premier travel destinations in Europe. Now, forced by a crushing economic crisis to be more competitive, prices in the travel sector have dropped significantly, making the country an even more attractive choice. According to Trivago, Greek hotels reduced their rates by 11 percent, the sharpest decline the industry has seen in Europe this year. This, along with other perks such as the exceptional climate and broad selection of hotels, makes the land of the gods a perfect destination for large groups and incentives. Here are some of the Greek destinations Azavista recommends. Besides the activities that you will have planned at the actual hotel, we have prepared some extra suggestions in order to give your participants a true Greek experience:
In Crete there is something for every preference and every traveler: semi-tropical beaches, mountainous landscapes, archaeological sites, a plethora of activities, enchanting traditional villages and one of the best local cuisines in Greece. Combine this with top class resorts, equipped to accommodate even the most demanding needs, you have got yourself a winner. Food: One of the main attractions in Crete is the food. Don't forget to take your group to one of the many traditional taverns. These are some of the dishes you should not miss out on: Staka (dish made from goat milk fat – goes great with fries), Kouneli Stifado (stewed rabbit), Apaki (smoked pork), Kaltzounia (sweet cheese pastries), Arni Frikase (lamb frikasee) and Kritiko Pilafi (Cretan rise dish). After all this, a shot of Raki is needed - a Cretan distilled hard spirit and one of the best digestives you will ever come across. Must Visit Beach: Organize a boat trip for your group and head to the Caribbean-like waters of Balos Fun Activity: Book a local guide and embark on a fascinating hike through the 16km Samaria Gorge. The walk takes five to seven hours. Archaeological Site: Knossos - the famous Minoan Palace which lies 5 kilometres southeast of Heraklion
Rhodes is the jewel of the Dodecanese islands and one of the biggest in Greece. The “Island of the Knights” boasts one of the most magical World Heritage sites in Europe – the old center of Rhodes town. The town itself is situated in a fortress and encompassed by massive stone walls. It offers the visitor a labyrinth of cobble-stone alley ways and picture perfect squares to relax and enjoy traditional delicacies. Rhodes has top notch resorts that can easily cater for any group, regardless of size and expectations. Along with its mild climate all year round, it is a prime location for group travel, incentives and conferences. Food: Rhodes is famous for its desserts and pies. Treat your group to Melekounia (dessert with aromatic thyme honey, natural sesame, almonds, orange and lemon peel and spices), Roditiko Salamaki (chocolate based dessert), Galaktoboureko (pie stuffed with custard) and Fanouropita (vegan spiced raisin cake). Rhodes also produces a wide variety of local red and white wines, as well as a special local beer that goes by the name Magnus Magister. Must Visit Beach: St. Pauls Bay at Lindos Fun Activity: Full-Day Cruise to the Island of Symi. Organize the trip from the harbour of Mandraki Archaeological Site: Acropolis of Lindos is perched on a rock 116m high and requires a 10 minute walk. Once inside, explore the diverse monuments in the site and enjoy the breathtaking view of the village and beach of Lindos.
Zakynthos is the third largest of the Greek Ionian Islands. Due to the centuries of Venetian rule, the island's architecture has a strong Italian influence and flare. Cobblestone alleyways, traditional fisherman villages, turquoise waters, lush greenery and island wildlife, Zakynthos offers a different Greek experience. The popularity of the island worldwide has seen the appearance of luxurious hotels and resorts that have the capacity and know-how to cater for large groups. Food: Kotopoulo kokkinisto (stewed chicken), Kalamari gemisto (stuffed kalamari), Ragous (thick pasta with red sauce, vegetables and chicken or beef). If you have a sweet tooth but want a healthier choice, try the traditional “pasteli:” a bar made out of sesame seeds and honey. Beaches: The beaches of Zakynthos are hosting the last and most important concentration of Loggerhead "Caretta caretta" turtle nesting sites in the Mediterranean. To watch the turtles in action take your group to the Bay of Laganas. Another beach that should not be missed is the famous Navagio. You can rent a boat especially for your group and take them to this idyllic, secluded beach, known for it's shipwreck and turquoise waters. Activities: Take your group on a boat trip and go snorkeling or scuba diving at the famous underwater Keri caves. Must See Site: More than an archeological site, a must see in Zakynthos is the Venetian castle. It is a Venetian fort located on the hill of Bohali and has wonderful panoramic views of Zante town and the Ionian Sea.
